1. Rio Lagartos
An impressive ecosystem where salt mines are nestled. It’s also a haven for pink flamingoes. An awesome place you need to see at least once in your life.
Beautiful little town just in the middle between Cancun and Merida. This lovely town is the food capital of Yucatan, plus having two great archaeological sites at a short distance, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. Visit one of the cenotes or sinkholes in the outskirts or take a drink at the cenote Zaci, about three blocks from the church in the picture above.
This biosphere reserve is two-hour drive from Merida. Celestun is a flamingo haven where you can take astounding pictures to bring back home. If you want to be truly in touch with nature, you must visit this amazing place.
Uxmal is a mysterious archaeological site south of Merida. There is a legend of a dwarf who became a king and by following the recommendations of his old grandma, bring a period of wealth to this mighty Mayan city.
5. Cenotes throughout Yucatan
The cenotes or sinkholes are open-air bodies of water or flooded caves which are underground connected in the whole Yucatan Peninsula. They are several in the Merida surroundings but also in the the Riviera Maya, and of course, hundreds are yet waiting to be discovered.
