Guanajuato is a gorgeous colonial city in the central area of Mexico. Is also the capital city of the same name state which has a remarkable past during both the Revolution and Independence wars.
Once you visit Guanajuato, you will fall in love with the Colonial style and the cobbled streets. Guanajuato is like a giant maze with hills and downwards and with lots of history and culture in each one.
This terrific place is also the capital city of the same name Mexican state and many episodes of the Independence fight and then, the Revolution Civil War took place in here. The state of Guanajuato is considered the cradle of the Mexican Independence, since Miguel Hidalgo started the rebellion in the charming village of Dolores Hidalgo.
Guanajuato, as a mining town, has in the outskirts one of the largest gold mines in the New Spain territory (by the way, don’t forget to visit La Valenciana mine and the precious church nearby). This area is also known as El Bajio and during the Colonial times and until this days, has a very rich soil and lots of goods are harvest in here.
In 1811 there was a battle within the city in a place called Alhondiga de Granaditas, where grains and other goods were storage for the Spanish forces (the Pipila is a very important figure in town. Ask for info during your vacations or come back to learn about him). This building was key to continue the fight and weeks later the rebellion was at the gates of Mexico City.
Guanajuato is also home for the Cervantino Festival, an iconic cultural fest and one of the most famous in the world tributing Miguel de Cervantes (which is to the Spanish Language like Shakespeare). Every October, hundreds of art performances take place in town and it’s definetely, an event you must attend at least once.
The best way to truly get into Guanajuato is walking the cobbled streets. With hundreds of alleys going up and down, historical buildings everywhere and the true scent of the Colonial Era, you will also get delighted with this city.
