The Independence Angel or El Ángel was created to commemorate the Independence Day in Mexico. Porfirio Diaz took seriously the celebrations and many buildings were built for the 100 years.
The victory column was created by Enrique Alciati and portraits Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. It’s built in bronze and covered in 24k gold. Although, the whole monument was designed by Antonio Rivas Mercado.
In the foundations of the monument, there is a mausoleum with the remains of the leaders who fought during the Independence War, including Miguel Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende and Morelos, among others.
If you are visiting Mexico City, take a walk or a segway tour through the Reforma Avenue, a beautiful place with gardens and you can even ride a bike or take a segway tour. And if you have some luck, it’s quite an experience to celebrate there when the soccer national team has an important victory or gain its classification to the World Cup.
