Who hasn’t heard about the famous tequila, mescal and some other refreshing Mexican drinks that combine culture and traditions in every sip?

If you love Mexico as much as we do, you may want to take a look at some other drinks that may not be so popular but definitely will give you a blast of flavors within your mouth.

This ancient spirit drink is made of sugarcane and its flavor is very much alike the traditional rum we all like and know. It’s very popular among the Tarascan civilization that live in the Mexican state of Michoacan and its name means “red-colored oil”, in the Purépecha language.

This Mexican drink has been renown as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

A traditional drink made by the Guaycura Indians that lived in state of Baja California Sur, and which was used during their ceremonies as an aphrodisiac, enhancing their sex drive.

This Mexican spirit has a tasty anise-like flavor and you can purchase it in a singular fat-shaped woman bottled. If you are visiting Los Cabos soon you can’t miss this delightful drink.

Mejengue, a traditional drink from Queretaro, Mexico


This popular drink of the Mexican state of Queretaro is made with pulque, maize, banana and brown-sugar-candy syrup. It has a strong flavor and is mostly prepared and enjoyed during major festivities.

A nice custom in Queretaro is to enjoy this drink with a traditional dish named as mole.

Rompope, a traditional drink from Puebla, Mexico


This delicious drink was prepared in the beginning in the convents by Clarisas nuns in Puebla, as they were used to welcome celebrities to whom they served the best dishes and drinks.

This famous drink has a sweet flavor and is prepared as an egg nog, with vanilla, cinnamon, ground almonds, milk and sugar. It’s been told that the original recipe remains safe in one of the Puebla’s convents.

This artisanal drink is mostly popular in Chihuahua, in Northern Mexico, and is prepared from the Sereque plant. It’s produced very much alike the mescal and its flavor is closer to the tequila taste.

Xtabentun is a Mayan millennial drink and a total tradition in Southern Mexico that is made from honeybees fed with Xtabentun, an anise flower alike. It’s very common to enjoy it cold or with coffee after any meal. If you are either visiting Merida or Chichen Itza, this is THE drink you should definitely include on your itinerary.
